Mural encourages women to challenge pre-established social roles

A mural painting in Chisinau dedicated to gender equality illustrates women in different professions that are primarily perceived as mail, The mural was made by Urban Spirit Family on the initiative of UN Women, IPN reports.

“Women and girls can decide themselves what areas to devote themselves to and it does not matter if they want to work in an area dominated by men. UN Women pleads for a world in which girls and women decide themselves and can choose to build careers that break models and stereotypes,” said Dominika Stojanoska, UN Women Moldova Country Representative, being quoted in a press release.

By this initiative, the girls and women are encouraged to challenge the pre-established social roles. “The social and cultural norms, gender stereotypes should not prevent them from achieving their goals and becoming whatever they want,” stated the representative of UN Women Moldova.

The mural can be seen at 146 Mitropolit Dosoftei St, on the wall of the Chisinau Electric Transport Company.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the figures of women and men differ considerably by economic activities. Women work primarily in healthcare and social assistance (81% of all salary earners in the sector), in education (76.7%) and financial and insurance activities (70.1%).  Men work mostly in the building sector (86.8%), agriculture, forestry and fishing (73%), transport and storing (71.8%).
