The municipality will replace the old water meters in Chisinau’s households by new and better ones. The statement belongs to Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, who mentioned that Apa-Canal, Chisinau’s main water supplier, is going to install new meters that will prevent scams.
The water supplier pledged to cover all the expenses related to the water meter installation. For that purpose, the mayor will suggest the managers of the housing sector and homeowners to transfer the piping systems inside the apartment blocks into Apa-Canal’s property, so that the water supplier is obliged to service the consumer free of charge when installing, repairing and checking the measuring devices.
In this way, says the mayor, the problem of the difference between the readings of the household meters and the collective ones will be finally solved. In his words, Apa-Canal estimated the difference at about 160 million lei, yet the managers of the housing sector refuse to include this sum in the bills.
The mayor says these measures have to be taken urgently, because a potential rise of 27% in water charges, to be considered at the next meeting of the City Council, will further enlarge this difference.
Dorin Chirtoaca expressed his hope that the people will accept the increase in the water charges when they see that Apa-Canal is working to their benefit.
Apa-Canal Chisinau is a municipal enterprise and the City Council its sole shareholder.
