The introduction of the cleanups tax is inopportune and the PAS group on the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) proposed a draft decision to annul it, said PAS councilor on the CMC Zinaida Popa. According to her, by this cleanup tax, mayor Ion Ceban burdens further the citizens of the municipality of Chisinau. For his part, municipal councilor Ruslan Verbitski said the cleanup tax is stipulated in the Tax Code and the relevant provision can be easily annulled in Parliament without a similar decision needing to be debated in the CMC, IPN reports.
Chisinau councilor of the Party of Action and Solidarity Zinaida Popa said the cleanup tax that the citizens of Chisinau need to pay should be annulled as mayor Ion Ceban capitalizes politically on it, initiating populist projects in the capital city.
“A lot of citizens were taken by surprise by this tax. We consider the introduction of this tax is not opportune and we came with a draft decision by which we aim to annul it. We are supported by mates from the CMC, who approved the inclusion of this draft decision in the agenda. We hope we will also be supported when the given draft decision is put to the vote. When this tax was instituted, Ion Ceban said that over 100 million lei will be collected in such taxes in the municipal budget. So, he wants to earn money for particular projects that are not even of a high quality on the account of the inhabitants. We see that the constructed sidewalks start to get ruined in a year,” Zinaida Popa stated in the program “Public Space” on Radio Moldova station.
Municipal councilor Ruslan Verbitski said the PAS councilors’ initiative to have the cleanup tax canceled is illogical as this tax is stipulated in the Tax Code.
“It is a decision dating from 2021. This tax was to be paid by the citizens starting with 2022, but was introduced in 2023. We didn’t vote for this draft decision as the pensioners do not pay, the minor children do not pay, the persons with disabilities do not pat, the war veterans do not pay. This cleanup tax is not a find of Ion Ceban. It is stipulated in the tax Code, alongside a series of local taxes that Ceban can approve or reject. With 63 seats of MP, it was easy for the PAS to amend the Tax Code and to remove the local tax. The discussions in the CMC would have ended and a draft decision wouldn’t have been necessary,” stated the councilor.
Earlier, mayor general of Chisinau municipality Ion Ceban said the cleanup tax of 10 lei a month was approved by the municipal councilors two years ago. Owing to the delays at the central level, it started to be applied only this year.
