The Munich Security Conference held last week confirmed that Russia is becoming increasingly authoritarian and does not take into account the interests of the state with which it should have partnership relations, Liberal MP Roman Botan, who heads the parliamentary commission on national security, defense and public order, stated in the program “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.
According to him, the Republic of Moldova is in a zone that is unstable in terms of security, where there are a number of states with internal problems that involve third countries. Roman Botan noted several important internal issues of those mentioned by Prime Minister Pavel Filip at the Munich Conference, namely: structural reforms, strengthening of democratic institutions and corruption fighting.
Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Viorel Cibotaru said it is obvious that Moldova detached itself from any European project. “I mean the failure to use the offers made by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union, especially during the past few years and in the security context to which Premier Pavel Filip referred at the conference,” he stated, noting that the current government does not want the commitments and reforms it declares.
Leader of the National Liberal Party Vitalia Pavlichenko said that for Moldova, the fact that there is no certainty as to stability in the zone and the stable attitude of the Western partners is a problem. “As long as the Republic of Moldova, through its governments, does not decide once and for all in which zone it will anchor itself, there will always be objections towards the Western partners when the problem is actually internal in character,” stated the politician.
Political analyst Nicolae Negru said there are both internal and external instability factors that affect the situation in Moldova. The internal factors refer to the situation in the Transnistrian region and the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, while the external ones to the instability of the Russian Federation. There is no day when Russia would not stage military exercises in the Transnistrian region, including exercises to cross the Nistru. “If the Russian troops head for Chisinau tomorrow, many of the citizens and politicians who plead for statehood now could meet these with flowers,” he noted.
