Multilevel tunnels may appear on main boulevard of Chisinau

Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca wants multilevel tunnels at the intersections of Stefan cel Mare Blvd. and a parking garage in the Great National Assembly Square. The subject was discussed in Monday’s ordinary meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials, Info-Prim Neo reports. Dorin Chirtoaca said that multilevel underground passages may be built at the most crowded intersections, like those of Stefan cel Mare Blvd. and Ismail St, Pushkin St, and Banulescu-Bodoni St. According to him, the tunnels will help fluidize traffic given that the units of transport in the capital city increase in number. The project is yet to be discussed. As to the underground parking garage, the mayor instructed the competent divisions to present the feasibility study and prepare a draft decision for the Municipal Council. He said that in Israel, from where he recently returned from a working visit, there are parking garages with five stories even. Dorin Chirtoaca specified that the underground parking garage in the central square of Chisinau will not include a shopping center, as projected earlier, because it will contribute to crowdedness. He also said that the project will be implemented under a public-private partnership and the investments will be recouped in 2-3 years. Several months ago, the mayor suggested setting up a lateral parking lot in the Great National Assembly Square, near the streets Pushkin and Banulescu-Bodoni.
