Removal of silt and mud from Valea Morilor Lake will continue, otherwise springs will fill the lake again, Ion Dermengi, interim head of the Municipal Capital Construction Division (DCC), stated. “From the technological point of view, the disruption of works is not recommended. Otherwise the level of groundwater will rise and the mud will soak up water, nullifying the half-year-long efforts to drain the pond”, Dermengi said. In his words, after the City Council decided in May to stop the works, DCC informed the City Hall that they mustn’t be disrupted, although the councillors were against their continuation in the absence of a project and a designed contractor for the removal of mud. Ion Dermengi says that to date there has been evacuated the sixth part of the estimated volume of sediment, and the present contractor could finalise the works by the end of the year if it is paid for. According to him, the Autocontrans Company performed works valued at 11 million lei out of a total of 41 million lei required; however it received nothing from the authorities, which puts the company on the verge of bankruptcy. Chisinau chief architect Vladimir Modarca pointed out that the Government promised to cover a half of the project and was supposed to disburse 10 million lei at the initial stage. Nevertheless, the central authorities didn’t allocate a penny yet. Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca stated that the case of Valea Morilor will be discussed at one of the next meetings of the City Council. CMC has disbursed only 2 million lei so far, and was expected to find another million to fully cover the expenses of the Acvaproiect Designing Institute. It is planned to build several objects on the territory of Valea Morilor Lake, including an aqua-park, a hotel, multileveled parking lots, a sports facility, a complex for public nourishment, and a modern beachside.
