A delegation of the Moldovan Parliament exposed the country’s position on the issue of the Kosovo province’s unilateral proclamation of its independence at the Winter session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly on Friday, February 22. On the second day of the Winter reunion of the OSCE PA, representatives of national delegations of the participating states presented their positions as to the recent proclamation of independence by the authorities of the Kosovo region. The head of the Moldovan delegation, MP Grigore Petrenco reiterated the Moldovan authorities’ profound concern over the unilateral proclamation of the independence by the Kosovo region. In the opinion of the Moldovan delegation, the unilateral proclamation of independence by this province is a severe violation of Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, running counter the UN Statute, the Resolution of the UN Security Council no. 1244 and the Helsinki Final Act. The Moldovan MPs opined that such a development of the situation in Kosovo encouraged separatism and escalated tensions not only in the Balkan Peninsula, in entire Europe, but in other areas of the world, too. The Moldovan delegation of MPs voiced for coordinating efforts internationally in order to overcome this danger, which were to be based on observing the principles of sovereignty and territorial unity of the independent states. Also, more national delegations remarked that Kosovo was a unique case not creating precedents for other regional conflicts. Both the Chişinău Parliament and Government adopted declarations expressing concern with the self-proclamation of Kosovo’s independence.
