An amendment to the law on waste that was given a first reading lifts the ban on burning used car tires. MP Ina Coșeru, who drafted the amendment, said other countries apply elements of the circular economy and implement solutions that enable not to store waste at waste dumps, IPN reports.

The MP said the storing of tires on the ground is more dangerous than their burning in a controlled way. The Republic of Moldova is a party to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The directive documents concerning the best available practices and the best environmental practices adopted under the Convention say scrap tires can be burned in cement kilns, for example.

Sure that the amendment will have a negative effect on the environment and on the health of people, the MPs of Șor Party voted against.

BCS MP Radu Mudreac said the pyrolysis method is better than burning. His proposal to debate the bill before putting it to the vote wasn’t yet accepted.

The amendment was carried by the votes of 52 MPs.
