The MPs of the pro-European parties say the disputes over the sum of 125 million lei needed for organizing the elections are useless. According to the MPs, after the presidential decree by which elections were called was signed, the holding of elections can no longer be questioned. Moreover, the MPs say the CEC president’s assertion that the number of polling stations could be reduced if the sum needed for holding the elections is decreased is worrisome, IPN reports.

Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi said the sum of 125 million lei needed for organizing the snap parliamentary elections is exaggerated. The Reserve Fund contains only 98 million lei and this sum is not enough for the proper organization of elections. The MPs consider the acting Premier’s narrative is inexplicable.

“The decree was published and there is the decision of the Constitutional Court. Therefore, on July 11 we will have snap elections and that’s all. All the responsible institutions, the CEC and the Government, should deal with the proper organization of elections. The PSRM and Shor are trying to compromise the idea of elections. The sum of 125 million lei indicated by the CEC is justified,” Democratic MP Nicolae Ciubuc stated in the program “Ghețu Asks” on TV8 channel.

According to some of the MPs, the reduction in number of polling places intended for the diaspora if the sum needed for elections is diminished, as the CEC chief asserted, would be an extremely dangerous precedent.

“We have election organization standards. They are not ideal, but we should always tend to fairer and more democratic elections and this costs. In a country in which a functionary says that there is no money for democracy, as the elections are democracy in its purest form, this is never a good sign,” said PAS MP Dumitru Alaiba.

The PPPDA MPs consider President Maia Sandu hurried to sign the decree to dissolve Parliament as the state budget law should have been first amended.

“Before signing the dissolution decree, she would have come to Parliament with a bill to amend the budget and to allocate money. If this formula was used, the Government is responsible for the allocation of funds. If I had been an accountant in the Government, I would have identified 300 million lei, not 125 million lei. There is money, but someone tries to continue their schemes,” said PPPDA MP Vasile Năstase.

The Central Election Commission determined that 125 million lei is needed for organizing the snap parliamentary elections on July 11. Of this sum, 12 million lei will go to purchase COVID-19 protection equipment.
