The head of the special commission for choosing candidates for the post of ombudsperson, MP Doina Gherman, considers the work of this commission should be suspended. The MP stated for IPN that as the Parliament was dissolved, the contest to choose the ombudsperson should be held after the snap parliamentary elections of July 11.
“Given that, in virtue of the provisions of Article 3 of Parliament Decision No. 4 of February 4, 2021, there are no problems in the functioning of the Ombudsperson’s Office, as the head of the special commission for choosing candidates for the post of ombudsperson, I consider the work of this commission should be suspended,” said the MP, who also heads the Parliament’s commission on human rights and interethnic relations.
This decision provides that the ombudswoman for children’s rights Maia Bănărescu will also hold the post of ombudsperson until Parliament appoints a new person to this post.
Doina Gherman said the new ombudsperson is to be selected by the new legislature, given the importance of this post in ensuring the promotion and protection of the basic human rights and freedoms.
The post of ombudsman fell vacant before time, following the death of Mihai Cotorobai on January 6, 2021.
