The A8 motorway will connect Romania and the Republic of Moldova, representing a true premiere for both of the states. The contract for the construction of the bridge over the Prut River in Ungheni will be signed in June this year. Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, state secretary of the Romanian Ministry of Transport, announced this following a meeting in Ungheni of those who are responsible for the construction of this bridge, IPN reports, with reference to Bugetul.ro.

With a length of 260 meters, the bridge will be built according to the standards of a highway and will represent the first connection of this type between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The duration of the contract will be 24 months, of which 6 months are allocated for design and 18 months for execution. The financing is provided from non-reimbursable European funds of over 156 million Romanian lei, without VAT, through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

The official specified that the construction of a single customs post on the territory of Romania, where the authorities of both of the countries will operate, is also being considered. He stressed that the Ungheni bridge is part of the A8 motorway project and includes a border crossing point, interconnecting the road infrastructures between the two states: Targu Mures – Iasi – Ungheni highway – state border (on the territory of Romania) and R1 national road Chisinau – Ungheni – border with Romania (on the territory of the Republic of Moldova).
