The National Patrolling Inspectorate, Moldova's traffic police authority, is warning motorists and pedestrians to expect hazardous road conditions with snow and ice forecast to hit the country starting Monday. Motorists are advised to avoid long journeys or take extra care if those are unavoidable.

The police are also reminding motorists that winter tires are mandatory for roads covered with snow and ice, and vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes must be additionally equipped with snow chains.

Motorists are advised to carry a bag of sand, a shovel, a warm blanket and a vacuum flask with hot drinks.

Drivers are also reminded to always keep a safe distance between vehicles, to drive with the low beam turned on during the daytime as well, and periodically check the battery.

The State Weather Service has issued a code-amber advisory for December 29 predicting heavy precipitation in the form of snow and melted snow. Additionally, wind will blow from NE in gusts of up to 15-20 m/s, creating blizzard conditions. Icy roads are also predicted.
