“The mothers have damned the war and have prayed for peace for 21 years. My son went to defend the land, the tricolor, the state anthem and the Romanian language. I couldn’t at least see his face, stroke his forehead and say goodbye to him,” said a mother whose son died in the Nistru war of 1992, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Nionela Popovici said that her son, who was a judge, wanted very much the country to be reunified and always thought about the future. “March 2 is a black day for our country. Armed enemies attacked Moldova. The country’s independence and integrity were in danger. About 30,000 young patriots went to defend their country as it was dearer for them than their own lives,” stated the woman.
The war left mothers and fathers without children, women without husbands and children without fathers. “They say the greatest pain is when children die before parents. I can say that this is true,” said Nionela Popovici.
Her son died in June in Tighina and was awarded the order “Stephan the Great and Holy” posthumously.
