A young woman from Chisinau was sentenced to three years in jail after she gave birth at home prematurely, but didn’t ask for medical assistance. The newborn died in four days. Medical examiners determined that the child could have been saved if the woman had given birth in a hospital. They also identified ethyl alcohol in the baby’s blood, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said the 28-year-old woman was found guilty of leaving the child in danger and of subsequently causing his death.
The woman gave birth when she was eight months pregnant. During the next four days, she didn’t take the boy for medical examinations and didn’t seek help. As he was underdeveloped and underweight, the child died on June 24, 2021.
The sentence can be challenged in the Chisinau Appeals Court within 15 days.
