The largest part of the women entrepreneurs in Moldova run a small business mainly in trade, the restaurant business or the hotel sector. Much more women than men managed to develop a business from zero, starting from the status of housewife or company employee, shows a study of the women entrepreneurship in Moldova, IPN reports.

In a roundtable meeting, the head of the International Center for Advancement of Women in Business Tatiana Batushkina said the women entrepreneurs more often work in newly created companies because they more often start a business from zero than men.

According to Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family Valentina Buliga, the fact that the number of women in the business sector is still low shows that the authorities have yet a lot to do in this respect.

Executive director of the employers association American Chamber of Commerce in Moldova Mila Malairau said that in some cases the women have to run a small business because they do not have time for a larger one. “After giving birth to one or two children, the women practically abandon their career. A large company requires time and devotion, but the women with children cannot afford this,” she stated.

The businesswomen attending the event said the authorities should open crèches for them or should offer them allowances so that they can hire a babysitter. 27% of the businesses in Moldova are run by women.
