The largest part of the patients who are under intensive care are unvaccinated, while the COVID-19 vaccine does not fully exclude infection, but ensures a milder form of the disease, said the head of the Intensive Care Unit of the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Moșneaga” Victor Cojocaru. According to the doctor, there are no patients waiting in the halls to occupy a place in intensive therapy at their hospital as they have a constant flow of patients who either die or are discharged and their place is swiftly taken by others, IPN reports.
According to Victor Cojocaru, the large number of COVID-19 cases recorded recently is due to the increased contagiousness of the Delta variant that causes havoc among older persons and among young people and children too.
“The Delta variant is much more aggressive. The initial variant of the virus attacked primarily the older persons with comorbidies, while now we have more infected young people. This means the body responds to the infection with hyperactivity and defends itself from this infection, the body’s response being more violent than the primary aggression. This way, the functionality of cells is weakened. If the virus enters the cell, the situation becomes more serious and depends on the immune system and on the infection dose. That’s why, even if 90% of the population is vaccinated, the general protection measures should be anyway respected,” Victor Cojocaru stated in the program “The Fourth Estate” on N4 channel.
According to the professor, most of the patients who are under intensive care are unvaccinated and have lower chances of survival.
“The places in intensive therapy are very costly. The therapy includes ventilation, aspirating, invasive monitoring. One doctor looks after five-six patients under intensive care, while one medical assistant looks after four patients there. We now have 48 persons with COVID-19 in our unit and most of them are unvaccinated. There were practically no deaths among vaccinated persons,” said Victor Cojocaru.
