On June 14, the citizens of Moldova will vote the new local administration. IPN News Agency set the goal to determine how the local public authorities coped during the current term that is coming to an end. Experts, opinion leaders and representatives of civil society from different settlements will assess the activity of the local authorities of the country’s districts and municipalities. Dubasari district has nine mayor’s offices for its 14 settlements and a population of over 30,000.

Petru Bondari, a member of the Association “Young people from the left bank of the Nistru”, said the current territorial-administrative division must be modified by restoring counties because many of the financial resources are spent on maintaining district authorities, which do not bring surplus value to the development of communities. On the contrary, they stop some of the local initiatives. Another solution is to offer broader autonomy to the local mayor’s offices. Initially, the people can be dissatisfied with the changes, but will later realize the benefits because the intermediary between the central power and the local one will disappear.

He also said that over the last four years most of the mayor’s offices of Dubasari district implemented projects to develop the settlements, including lighting, water supply and sewerage projects. In Parata village, there was opened a modern family doctors center, connected to gas. In Cosnita, a business incubator was set up and the kindergarten was repaired. In Molovata, there were opened social centers for the elderly, while in Oxentea – centers for children with disabilities and an old people’s home were created. Recently, the mayor’s office of Molovata inaugurated a family doctors center, built with support from the EU.

Petru Bondari said the situation would be better if the communities engaged more in decision making and if the central authorities didn’t steel money from those who pay money into the budget. Given the latest developments in the country, many people are decided to go abroad to live quieter there. A part of those who worked abroad and invested money in starting businesses at home intend to close them owing to the pressure exerted by the inspection bodies, which are very though now on economic entities.

The projects to develop private businesses that would create workplaces are a priority for the district because the people in villages do not have employment. Also, the farmers from Dubasari should be allowed to cultivate their land located on the left side of the Nistru, to which they do not have access owing to the restrictions imposed by the separatist forces, stated Petru Bondari.

As to the expectations of the June 14 local elections, Petru Bondari said he hopes there will be elected competent and responsible persons who will be able to solve the problems faced by the settlements.
