A number of 173 hectares of forests burned last year, as opposed to 119 hectares in 2015. The caused damage was estimated at 191,000 lei.
According to the spokeswoman for the Forestry Agency “Moldsilva” Viorica Caciuc, most of the forest fires were caused by humans.
“The intentional or unintentional setting of fire as a result of picnics or walks in the forest is the leading cause. There were drawn up 23 contravention reports against private individuals, but no legal entity was involved. Each enterprise plans the anti-fire measures within the limits of a particular sum. The plan of action that will include these measures will be worked out at the start of March,” Viorica Caciuc stated for IPN.
The forests in Moldova represent 12.7% of the country’s territory. Some 87.2% of the wooded areas are state-owned, while the others are managed by the local authorities.
