The largest number of persons who were sentenced for drug distribution are young ones. The destructive effect of trafficking in drugs affects not only the consumers or persons who are convicted for offenses related to drugs. The parents, the family, the whole community suffers, acting chief prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) Victor Furtuna stated in a press club meeting. Over the last six months of this year, more than one third or 56 of the 160 sentences passed with the participation of PCCOCS prosecutors were for drug distribution, IPN reports.

Victor Furtuna noted that PCCOCS does not focus on drug consumers, but examines particular drug distribution cases. The task is to identify those who are behind these offenses. “We realize that the minor or the person who only puts drugs in special places is just an instatement that is manipulated and used. Those persons agreed to put drugs in secret places for particular sums of money or for benefits,” said the acting chief prosecutor.

When drugs are found on the border, it is not only drug distribution, but also drug trafficking, which is a serious offense that carries imprisonment.

Asked by journalist about the profile of drug traffickers, Victor Furtuna said the criminal groups are transnational. They include citizens of the Republic of Moldova and of other states. The prosecutors in Moldova closely cooperate with Romanian and Ukrainian counterparts. At the moment, the criminal procedure law enables them to form joint investigation teams. This is a newer procedure that implies the exchange of information on criminal cases directly with representatives of other states.
