The most acclaimed European films of 2023 will be screened in Moldova during the “European Film Month”, launched today in Chisinau. Moldova is joining this initiative for the first time, with Chisinau becoming one of over 75 European cities where the public can watch the winning films of international film festivals such as those of Cannes, Berlin or Locarno.

Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan, as quoted in a press release, noted that it is the first time that Moldova is part of this program. “We want the notion of Moldovan cinematography to fit into the family of European cinematography. In our path of European integration, it is very important to be on the same wavelength, to be connected to European cinematographic processes. Our filmmakers demonstrated a radical change in the potential of the Republic of Moldova”, said the minister.

The director of the National Cinematography Center of the Republic of Moldova, Valentina Iusuphodjaev, said that films are “the most beautiful way, the simplest and the most accessible way to share the fact that we are European, we have European sensibility, we have European perceptions and values”. According to her, in Moldova there are viewers who want good films, and this event aims to offer them the opportunity to connect them with such films and with European art.

Raluca Costache, team leader of the “Strategic communication and support for the Moldovan mass media” project, noted that the European Film Month is one of the cultural actions supported with the financing of the European Union through the Europe Café, which is the most important Center of EU information. The center frequently hosts cultural events, and one of our missions is to promote the cultural rapprochement between the EU and the Republic of Moldova.

“European Film Month” is an initiative of the European Film Academy (AEF), organized simultaneously in over 75 cities across Europe. In Moldova, the event is organized for the first time, by Europe Café, with the financial support of the European Union and the National Cinema Center.

During one month, seven films from countries such as France, Spain, Georgia, Lithuania, Romania will be screened. The themes of the films are diverse, such as human solidarity, inclusion, diversity, family values, civic responsibility, dialogue between generations and others. The films were chosen from a list of 30 European film productions selected by the European Film Academy for the Best European Film award – a title that will be presented to one of these films at the award ceremony, which will take place on 9 December in Berlin.

Screenings in Moldova will take place on Fridays and Sundays, starting on November 3, at the Cineplex Loteanu cinema in Chisinau. Admission to all films is based on tickets that can be picked up free of charge at the Cineplex Loteanu cinema in Chisinau. Tickets for each film will be available one week before the screening. This year’s European Film Month will be opened by the 2023 Palme d’Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival, Anatomy of the Fall (France).
