The National Police Inspectorate (INP) announces to have taken further steps to prevent traffic accidents on national routes, especially in August, when citizens are headed to or back from vacation. Patrol officers will organize more filters and checks with radar-equipped undercover cars, IPN reports.

Pavel Apostol, head of the INP Public Relations Service, has stated during a press conference that the measures come in response to previous statistical data for the month of August, when many grave, often fatal accidents happen. Most accidents happen because of exceeded speed limits. Second comes driving under influence, and the third cause is fatigued drivers who fall asleep behind the wheel.

The law enforcers urge citizens to respect Traffic Safety Regulations, as well as denounce those who commit traffic violations. A drunken driver is a risk to all participants in traffic. Country entry/exist points will be manned with officers distributing booklets containing the rules that ought to be respected.

According to data from INP, in August last year, 262 accidents happened in Moldova, in which a total of 27 people have died, and 313 were wounded. In the first seven months of this year, there were 1361 accidents, which have lead to 145 deaths, and 1642 injured persons.
