More drug- and alcohol-related deaths in Chisinau

The number of persons in the municipality of Chisinau who died from diseases caused by drugs and alcohol has increased during the last four years, shows a report by the municipal Health Division, which says that the people who abuse drugs and alcohol are identified with delay, Info-Prim Neo reports. The rate of deaths from drug-induced diseases in Chisinau rose from 84 per 100,000 people last year to 106. The report reveals that the number of drug-related deaths among children is also on the rise. Though the number of persons who died of alcohol abuse last year was lower compared with 2009, it was higher than in 2006. HIV/AIDS is also a major cause of death in the municipality of Chisinau. The AIDS death rate in 2010 was 1,157 per 100,000, as against 1,069 in 2009 and 794 in 2006. Even if tuberculosis morbidity in 2010 decreased to 81.9 from 119.6 in 2006, the report points to an increase in TB incidence in the areas adjoining Chisinau, mainly Ghidighici, Gratiesti, Bubuieci, Vadul lui Voda, Bacioi, Sangera.
