A memorial to the victims of HIV/AIDS was inaugurated in the central park of Chisinau. The monument represents a bench consisting of 5,300 metal nuts with 1,756 screws, which is the number of persons who died from AIDS in Moldova. A part of the bench is without screws and symbolizes the chance to live, IPN reports.

Attending the unveiling ceremony, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said that AIDS is a disease that provides no way back, but one can live with it. “Realizing the gravity of this disease is one step forward towards healthy society,” he stated.

UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Nicola Harrington-Buhay said that Moldova needs legislation that would fully cover and protect the rights of those infected with HIV, because they are often discriminated when they apply for a job or to education institutions.

UNAIDS Moldova coordinator Gabriela Ionascu said that even if there is an organized medical network and free treatment is provided, a lot of people die from AIDS every year. “This memorial should remind us about those who died from AIDS. It is also a message for those who are alive – that they should receive treatment and live,” she stated.

Ruslan Poverga, chairman of the Positive Initiative Association, which organized the event, said he is very proud that the memorial is located in the center of Chisinau as at first it was to be placed on the outskirts. He stressed that the association will do everything possible to help the people infected with HIV to lead a normal life, without discrimination.

Attending the event, singer Dara was the first to sit on the bench.

The inauguration of the memorial was the final part of the motor caravan staged by the Positive Initiative Association trough seven districts. The monument was designed and produced by interior designer Elena David and architect Ion David during several months.

According to the Health Ministry, there are 8,061 persons with HIV/AIDS who are officially registered in Moldova. Most of them are from Balti, Tiraspol, Bender, and Chisinau.
