A monument dedicated to the people who were tortured in the aftermath of the 4/7/2009 events will be erected in the square outside the Parliament building in Chisinau, under a City Council ordinance adopted on Friday on the proposal of the Government, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca stated the structure will be a monument to liberty.
The leader of the Communist faction in the City Council, Valeri Pavlov, said the initiative was worthless. "Almost a year after those events the commission that investigates the April 2009 events hasn't formulated any answer to what happened then. Yet you want to erect monuments. Mister Filat would better concern himself with other issues, like agriculture, for example”, said the Communist councilman. Independent councilman Oleg Oniscenco agreed: "We cannot install monuments until we know what exactly happened on April 7”.
Deputy Mayor Nistor Grozavu said one idea for the monument has been already selected in a contest held for this purpose. It suggests a composition of crosses situated on a plane. But this is not the final version.
The monument is supposed to be unveiled this April.
