MEP Monica Macovei expresses her concern about the decisions taken by the Transnistrian leader Yevgheny Shevchuk, which she describes as irresponsible and dangerous for stability in the region. In a press statement, the MEP says Yevgheny Shevchuk’s insistence of the last few years on conceding the region to the Russian Federation has now taken a new form: recognition of a referendum that is ten years old, which provides that the Russian legislation should be applied in the region, IPN reports.
Monica Macovei said the Romanians from the Transnistrian region are permanently under the pressure of the Transnistrian authorities, while the professors and teachers of the Romanian language schools are continuously subject to intimidation, are harassed and threatened.
“Instead of offering the people democracy, liberty and freedom from dictatorship, Shevchuk wants to cede them to Putin, to take them to instability, insecurity and terror. The territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova must be supported with firmness and Putin’s wish to restore the USSR must be stopped,” stated the MEP.
According to Monica Macovei, the referendum held in 2006 was illegal, being staged on a part of Moldova’s territory by an authority that is not recognized at international level. Russian soldiers with Kalashnikov guns on shoulders, with barriers, with Russia’s stem and with a booth where the list of persons who can enter the Transnistrian region, approved by the so-called president, have stayed for many years on the Nistru River, even if this is Moldova’s territory.
