The Ministry of Education, Culture and Research is very concerned about the fact that teaching is the least popular among high school graduates, Minister Monica Babuc stated in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
According to her, there are by 16-17 applications per place at the faculties of law and economy and only one or no application at the faculties of biology, physics, math or history teaching. “There is an acute shortage of teachers of physics in the schools of the Republic of Moldova. There is also an acute shortage of teachers of math and, in general, more than 40% of the teachers in the Republic of Moldova are persons who already retired, some of whom long ago,” stated Monica Babuc. She noted that these continue to work because there are no replacements for these.
The minister said the teaching methods develop continuously and young specialists are needed as these faster learn the teaching methodologies. “This makes us think about increasing the prestige of the teaching profession,” noted Monica Babuc, adding that the salaries of teachers should be raised for the purpose.
Furthermore, the state will assume the promotion of the teaching profession and will support the young people who enroll at teaching specialties by providing larger scholarships and by early identifying children who have an inclination for these specialties while at high school. “We want to unite all these things into one strategy for promoting the teaching profession among young people,” stated the minister.
