Moldova's unpaid salaries at 80 million lei

As of June 1, 2008, the total amount of late or unpaid salaries stood at 80 million lei. The largest salary debt – 44.5 million lei – constitutes the unpaid salaries of the agricultural workers. In industry, the salary debt was 23.6 million lei, 18.9 million of which in the processing industry, Info-Prim Neo reports, citing the Ministry of Economy and Trade. The salary debt in the case of the state-run enterprises (in public property) constitutes 12.4 million leu, of the companies in private property 50.6 million lei, and of the companies in mixed property (both public and private) 17 million lei. On June 1, there were 394 companies which failed to pay salaries on time, 11 of which owe more than 1 million lei in salaries to their workers. Among them are SA Alimentarmas (Chisinau), Apa-Canal Edinet, Bitav-Prim (Glodeni), Agrogloria (Rascani), Corlateanca (Rascani), Tvardita (Taraclia), SA Uzina din Vulcanesti (UTA Gagauzia), etc. According to the Labor Code, if salaries, leave pays, layoff pays and other pays legally due to the employee are late because of the employer, the employee shall be paid an extra 0.1 percent of the overdue pay for each day of the delay.
