The Republic of Moldova’s team has joined the opening of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. The officials will discuss the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on the region and will emphasize Moldova’s contribution to European stability, IPN reports.
On the first day of the session, Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, had a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings. The official discussed in New York with Maryia Gabriel, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgarian. The officials underlined the comradeship between Moldova and Bulgaria, noting the intensification of the political and diplomatic dialogue. In this connection, the ministers agreed to strengthen economic cooperation and to develop cooperation in education and culture, especially given the presence of the Bulgarian community in Moldova.
Also, Deputy Premier Popescu had a meeting with representatives of Jewish organizations in the U.S., under the aegis of the American Jewsih Committee. On this occasion, Minister Popescu addressed a series of subjects of common interest, such as the policies to promote the memory of the Holocaust in Moldova. “I underscored the actions taken by the Government of the Republic of Moldova in cooperation with the local authorities and the Jewish Community in our country to promote the culture of tolerance, to strengthen the institutional framework to combat anti-Semitism and other forms of xenophobia, to preserve and put to good use the Jewish cultural heritage on the territory of our county as part of the national cultural and historic heritage. I mentioned the most recent example when our authorities facilitated the transit of tens of thousands of Hasidic Jews to Uman in Ukraine to celebrate the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah,” stated the Moldovan official.
Nicu Popescu also met with Yuri Kim, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasian Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. “We discussed the European course of the Republic of Moldova and the importance of the assistance offered by the U.S. in doing the necessary reforms for achieving this national desideratum. In this connection, I emphasized the significant progress we made, including in implementing the nine recommendations put forward by the European Commission and underlined the Government’s firm commitment to continue these efforts for the benefit of the Moldovan citizens,” said the Deputy Premier.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and the United States Department of State are committed to maintaining open communication and strong cooperation for promoting common objectives in the field of international relations and good governance.”
