Moldova’s Railways does not confirm suspension of train routes

The information that the local and suburban train routes will be suspended as from February 12 wasn’t confirmed by the acting director general of Moldova’s Railways Adrian Onceanu. He has told IPN that a plan of measures for improving the situation at the enterprise was presented in the meeting of the Parliament’s commission on economy, budget and finance that was held on February 4. The suspension of the local and suburban train routes as of February 12 was one of the proposals, but this wasn’t accepted by the commission.

Adrian Onceanu said that approximately 20,000 passengers were transported by local routes and 5,498 passengers by international routes in the course of last year. The losses total about 114 million lei.

On February 4, the MPs decided to creates a special commission on the parliamentary platform for analyzing the economic-financial situation of the state-owned enterprise Moldova’s Railways and the results of the activity of the railway transport sector for 2010-2020. According to the Socialist MPs, who are the authors of the bill, the enterprise’s credit debt at the end of 2020 was 459.4 million lei. The salary arrears (partially for October and November 2020) came to 35.5 million lei, the debts for the contributions to the social insurance and health insurance budgets to 26.9 million lei, while to the budget to 5.5 million lei. The commission consists of ten members and is headed by Oleg Lipskii. It will present a report on the results and conclusions of the investigation in Parliament within 60 days.
