President Igor Dodon intends to discuss the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova with representatives of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during his official visit to Brussels scheduled for the beginning of February. The President informed about this in an extended-format meeting with representatives of the media in the evening of January 24, IPN reports.
“I asked for a meeting with representatives of NATO within my visit to Brussels. I would like to have a sincere discussion about their position on the neutrality status of the Republic of Moldova. It would be ideal to even sign a relevant statement– that NATO recognizes the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova,” said the President.
He also said he is against opening a NATO Liaison Office in Chisinau. “In the Republic of Moldova, which is a neutral state, we should not have NATO Liaison Offices or other military organizations. The opinion and concern of a part of society is that this office could be the first step towards preparing the entry into NATO. That’s why I’m against opening this office. We do not need it,” stated Igor Dodon.
He noted that Moldova should be a country without foreign troops on its territory. According to him, the Russian troops that were stationed on the left side of the Nistru without the consent of the constitutional authorities of Moldova would be pulled out after the Transnistrian conflict is settled.
