Moldova’s integration into EU energy market discussed in Brussels

The integration of the Republic of Moldova into the EU energy market by developing the legal framework and the gas and electricity interconnections with the European Union was discussed in a meeting of Prime Minister Pavel Filip and the European Commission Vice President for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič in Brussels. The two also discussed the fulfillment of the commitments undertaken in the area through the Association Agreement and Agenda, IPN reports.

According to the Government’s press service, the officials underlined the necessity of strengthening cooperation in the area of energy security, in particular of diversifying the supply routes and sources. They conferred on the transposition of the Third Energy Package, extension of the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline and strengthening of the independence of the National Agency for Energy Regulation of Moldova.

The Premier appreciated the efforts made by the European Commission and Maroš Šefčovič to strengthen the European energy security, highlighting the Vice President’s initiative to create a cooperation framework intended for the High Level Group on Central and South Eastern Europe Gas Connectivity to which Moldova is a party.

The interlocutors also discussed concrete methods of supporting Moldova in its efforts to modernize the energy sector and to become integrated into the regional system.
