The integration of Moldova into the EU will not be possible until a change of government or a change of political majority in Moldova threatens the geopolitical direction of this state, considers Romania Ambassador in Chisinau Marius Lazurca.

In a public debate entitled “Romania as a model for Moldova’s European course”, staged by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova, the Romanian diplomat said that Moldovan society, through the agency of its representatives, at a certain moment will have to pronounce on the course that the country must follow and to make concerted effort to achieve this objective.

“The Romanian political class and the leaders of society, the religious organizations, etc. signed in Snagov a document by which they all agreed that the integration into NATO and the European Union will be the development course of Romania. I fear that Moldova cannot do without such a process. This document can be given any name, but society at a certain moment will have to decide the country’s development course,” said Marius Lazurca.

He also said that the Europeans integration is a long-term process that is longer than the electoral cycles. That’s why predictability is needed. “The European integration is a rather difficult process and the lack of popular support for this process deprives it of the required energy. A social pact is needed by which the Moldovans, as a result of consultations and debates initiated by the political parties, universities and other institutions, will decide once and for all the direction towards which the state must go so that the people enjoy such fundamental rights as freedom, security, etc,” stated the diplomat.

Marius Lazurca noted that a model must be found to suit Moldova the best and to be supported by all the people on a long term, regardless of the costs that this objective implies.

“Polls show that an important part of the population easily and swiftly changes opinions concerning the development course and this is difficult. Society must be consolidated around values and strong ideas that the politicians should explain to society, while the people should give these politicians their votes so that they pursue these goals,” said Marius Lazurca.

The debate “Romania as a model for Moldova’s European course” is the 30th of the series of debates “Development of political culture in public debates” that are organized by IPN in concert with Radio Moldova and are supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
