Moldova’s biggest success this year was the election of the President, which helped to unblock the political situation in the country. The conclusion was voiced by the rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Piotr Vach and Lise Christoffersen, who were in Moldova for a fact-finding visit this week, Info-Prim Neo reports. Speaking before the press on Friday, the rapporteurs noted that the ruling alliance wasted half of its term in office because of the political impasse until the election of the President. Piotr Vach and Lise Christoffersen said that the Moldovan authorities managed to adopt several important laws, but these laws should also be applied. The rapporteurs appreciated the adoption of an Action Plan on the implementation of Moldova’s commitments before the CoE. The officials also noticed a greater freedom of media and that those they met with were more open in talks than during the rapporteurs’ previous mission in November 2011. Piotr Vach and Lise Christoffersen didn’t reveal whether they would recommend or not to the Council of Europe to advance Moldova to the post-monitoring stage, as the authorities in Chisinau have requested. The two European officials also visited the Transnistrian region of Moldova, but nobody of the Tiraspol self-proclaimed administration was available to meet them.
