At the end of the first quarter, Moldova’s gross external debt stood at $ 8.986 billion, which is 64% of GDP. According to preliminary data from the National Bank of Moldova, during the first quarter, the debt decreased insignificantly, by 0.3%.
Most of the external debt is long-term debt (69.2%), which amounted to $ 6.221 billion as of March 31, 2022, down by 0.8% from the beginning of 2021. Short-term external debt increased by 0.8% during the first quarter of the this year and amounted to $ 2.756 billion as of March 31.
According to the NBM, public external debt accounted for 29.8% of total external debt, amounting to $2.678 billion (-1.9% fron the beginning of the year). Private external debt amounted to $6.309 billion, up by 0.4% from December 31, 2021.
