Moldova’s external debt up by 6.8% last year

Moldova’s gross external debt increased during 2021 by 6.8% and totaled $ 9.014 billion as of December 31, which represented 65.9% of the GDP, according to preliminary data of the National Bank of Moldova.

Long-term debt accounted for most of it: 69.6%, or $6.269 billion as of the end of 2021, while short-term debt represented 2.744 billion.

Public external debt accounted for 30.3% of the total, increasing by 12.4% from the beginning of the year, and private external debt rose by 4.6% from 31 December 2020, making up 69.7% of the total.

The current account deficit of Moldova’s balance of payments has increased substantially in 2021 compared to 2020, both in absolute terms and relative to GDP. The deficit amounted to $1.590 million, up 78.2%. Relative to GDP, the current account deficit was 11.6% in the negative.
