First Deputy Speaker Vlad Plahotniuc and Danish Ambassador to Moldova and Romania Michael Sternberg approved of the European development prospects of Moldova in the current political and economic context. The two officials had a working meeting in Chisinau, where they discussed the political situation in Moldova and the priorities of Denmark, which holds the presidency of the EU this year, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Parliament. Vlad Plahotniuc confirmed the European course of Moldova, saying all the measures taken by the ruling alliance are subsumed under the European integration objective. “Moldova is in the process of transition from the post-Soviet stage to modern democracy. I confirm that Moldova’s course is towards the EU and the values and principles of the European democracy. There is no hesitation in this respect,” Vlad Plahotniuc said in the meeting. For his part, Michael Sternberg praised Moldova for the efforts made to develop democracy, after the government was replaced in 2009. “We will continue to contribute to Moldova’s progress, especially as regards the signing of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area Agreement with the EU and the liberalization of visas for the Moldovan travelers. We decided to support you as a state by all the methods possible so that you could meet the people’s expectations,” said the ambassador. As to the opportunities to invest in Moldova, presented by the First Deputy Speaker, the Danish diplomat said his country is interested in implementing projects to improve the emergency medical services and the businesspeople pay increased attention to the investment opportunities in the naval and maritime freight sector, eolian energy and production of biofuel. “All the changes made in Moldova are like a two-way highway. Effort is made to improve the living standards and the foreign investors see this and look for possibilities to invest. But there are two obstacles – the non-election of the head of state and the Transnistrian issue,” he stated. In the end of the meeting, Vlad Plahotniuc voiced hope that more such meetings will be held in the form of working sittings. “Given the role played by Parliament in a democracy, especially in Moldova, I suggest initiating cooperation by continuing the bilateral official meetings with working meetings involving Danish experts in European integration and legislation, who would provide consultancy to the Moldovan legislature,” he said.
