Moldova’s Embassy in Israel will not be relocated from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, stated foreign minister Nicolae Popescu.
When the relocation was announced on June 11, argued Popescu at a press conference, the Filip Government was no longer legitimate. “What basically happened was that a group of ordinary Moldovans who once held Cabinet offices gathered together and adopted a political resolution”, while “on that date, the Government of Moldova was already being led by Maia Sadu”, said Popescu.
When asked about the second decision announced by Pavel Filip on that day, which reconfirmed a deal to sell a city block in central Chisinau for the U.S. Government to build a new embassy, Popescu said the decision had long been adopted and on June 11 it was merely reiterated. “We don’t have an issue here. We are working to have all the papers ready in the near future so that the U.S. can have a new embassy in Chisinau,” said Nicolae Popescu.
On whether the new government will go ahead with Filip Cabinet’s plans to have embassies opened in India, Argentina, Ghana, and Ireland, Popescu said he didn’t have time to look at the issue yet, but he agreed that Moldova needed a strong, visible and respected diplomatic network abroad.
