From economic viewpoint, the Republic of Moldova is at the level of 1982. Earlier Moldova ranked last but one in Europe ahead of Albania, but now Albania is placed fourth at the end of the list with a Gross Domestic Product per capita that is two times higher than that of Moldova. With the current paces, Moldova could catch up with Albania only in 2033, economic expert Vasile Șoimaru stated in the context of the launch of the academic committee for promoting regional development actions and policies C15.

“If we compare the Republic of Moldova with other states, like Romania or the three Baltic states - our former “sisters”, for example, we need annual rates of 15-20% to reach their feet at least,” Vasile Șoimaru stated in a news conference at IPN. According to him, since 1990 until 2000, Moldova’s Gross Domestic Product decreased three times. There is no other European or former Soviet state that witnessed such a decline. Since 2000 during 18 years, the Republic of Moldova only rose to the economic level of 1982.

In this connection, Vasile Șoimaru commented on the statements made by Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who said the country follows the correct path.  “How can we say that we are following the correct path when our development level is similar to that of 1982. We do not need politicians who would have much courage and skillfulness to take unordinary decisions. I don’t know if there is another state in Europe that needs such decisions. Who will help us get out of this pit,” asked the expert.

Professor Angela Boguș said the highest number of business entities is concentrated in the municipality of Chisinau.  About 65% of the employees are in Chisinau. The capital city has an advantage compared with the rural areas in terms of business activities that are much larger in number here. The number of businesses concentrated in Chisinau offers additional advantages to the local public budget, but not many development possibilities for the disfavored areas. In some regions in Moldova, the number of business entities decreased considerably or these remained on paper only as it is very hard to close down a businesses.

Professor Mariana Yatsko noted the young people represent almost one third of Moldova’s population – 32.4% - according to the statists for January 2018. This category has constantly declined during the past ten years. The statistics are similar to those of the education system and youth employment sector. The quality of education affects education and later the supply on the labor market and this is due to the fact that many teachers leave the system and this figure is also alarming. In some regions, the vacancies of teachers in schools are simply not filled.

C15 is a platform by which the experts aim to warn the political class about the departures in the economic and social development of the Republic of Moldova. It consists of professors of different higher education establishments who are experts in demography, labor market, energy, entrepreneurship and other areas.
