The exports of Moldovan cherries and sour cherries this year are two times larger than last year. According to Customs Service data, cherry exports grew by 117%, while sour cherry exports by 99%, IPN reports.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry said that despite the regional crisis, the companies combined forces and by now managed to export over 12,000 tonnes of cherries (about 640 trucks) and over 3,000 tonnes of sour cherries (about 160 trucks).
Cherry exports came to over 215 million (up 202%), compared with over 91 million lei in 2019, more than 116 million lei in 2020 and over 71 million lei in 2021.
Sour cherry exports added up to over 38 million lei, (up 183%), as opposed to over 13 million lei in 2021.
The Ministry said that the Customs Service, in cooperation with the National Food Safety Agency and the Association of Fruit Producers and Exporters “Moldova Fruct” and together with the Parliament’s commission on agriculture and food industry, designed a mechanism to facilitate and prioritize the export of highly perishable agricultural products (vegetables and fruit) and set down norms concerning the crossing of the border with such type of merchandise.
During the state of emergency, so as to ensure optimal conditions for the export of perishable agricultural products, priority clearance and border crossing conditions are created for perishable agricultural products exported from the Republic of Moldova.
Each year, the areas occupied by cherry and sour cherry orchards are renewed by planting highly productive sorts that are popular on foreign markets.
At the begging of this year, sour cherry orchards in Moldova occupied about 4,500 ha, while cherry orchards – 5,300 ha.
