Representatives of the police and prosecution service, lawyers and public functionaries will attend training courses centering on combating of trafficking in human beings. Also, the capacities of the players responsible for the prevention, provision of assistance and rehabilitation of victims of trafficking in persons will be strengthened. The measures form part of a project that was launched in Chisinau on May 29. The United States will provide US$400,000 for implementing this, IPN reports.

In the launch, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Tudor Ulianovschi, chairman of the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, said the improvement of the protection of the victims of trafficking and strengthening of the state capacities are an important step in the process of fighting this scourge in Moldova.

Charge d’Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Moldova Julie Stufft welcomed the fact that Moldova took over the initiative to combat trafficking in human beings, becoming a regional leader in the process of fighting trafficking in persons.

The project envisions the organization of a series of training courses for over 850 representatives of the police and prosecution service, public lawyers and 360 public functionaries from other state institutions. A goal is to persuade the private sector to cooperate with the authorities.
