Moldova’s authorities suspend imports of animals and animal products from Romania

Moldova’s sanitary authorities are alarmed at the news of a bird flu focus on Romania’s territory. Due to that, the authorities announced the suspension of imports of animals and animal products from Romania. Data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of Moldova show that a H5N1 highly pathogenic bird flu focus has been confirmed on November 28 on Romania’s territory. Just one bird flu focus has been discovered in a private epidemiological unit in Tulcea (125 km far from the border with Moldova). The infection source is still to be established. At the same time, the Medical Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry announce a series of prevention measures, including a more intense control at the border check points by disinfecting. In addition, the territorial veterinary units are undertaking on the entire territory of Moldova extra supervision measures for the birds and animals in the responsive species. The State Veterinary Service is also training the poultry owners and growers in order to familiarise them with the danger of the avian influenza virus and with its prevention methods.
