Starting with April 28, the Moldovans will be able to travel visa-free in the Schengen Area. The date was announced by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca in the program “Politics” on TV7 channel in the evening of March 31, IPN reports.

Iurie Leanca made the announcement following statements by Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean, who had been in Moldova on a visit, and by the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola. The two officials said the visa requirements for Moldovans will be abolished by the end of April.

Iurie Leanca expressed his confidence that the abolition of the visa regime will enable the Moldovans to travel more in the EU. The families will reunite more often, while those from the diaspora will return home more frequently.

The Moldovans holding biometric passports will be able to travel visa-free in the EU member states, except for the UK, for a period of up to 90 days within six months. The measure also applies to the EU member states Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Cyprus that do not form part of the Schengen and to four Schengen countries that are not EU member states, namely Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
