The Republic of Moldova resists owing to the money that the diaspora sends to relatives in Moldova and owing to business entities. The state, instead of treating them respectfully, often puts them in difficult situations, said bus driver Ion Cojocaru, who had goods he transported confiscated and was even fined.
“If a million persons send home by 100 euros, it will be 100,000 million euros that comes to the country. Many have parents, relatives, siblings here and help them somehow,” the man told a news conference given at IPN. He noted that life in Moldova can improve, but those who are in power do not want this to happen as they take care of their own pockets only.
The news conference was given together with Dumitru Pogorea, president of honor of the National Moldovan Cultural Center of Novosibirsk, who returned home after staying in Russia for 30 years. He said he was sad to find an inflation rate of 30% here. The inflation rate in war-torn Ukraine is lower. “I want someone to go out and explain things. We, those who are in the country and those who are away, ask you to do your best for the living conditions in Moldova to change,” urged the man.
Dumitru Pogorea spoke about the difficulties he faced on the road home and the law on the exemption of citizens of the Republic of Moldova who return home to live here from paying import duties, saying the mechanism should be improved and the exemptions should be applied equitably and proportionally. The person’s period of stay abroad and the goods accumulated in the period should be taken into account. The obligation to inform the customs authorities about the intention to take goods over the border 30 days beforehand should be abandoned as the person cannot know how swiftly the realty abroad will be sold and how quickly the transportation of goods will be organized.
