Strawberries grown in Moldova appeared at the markets of Chisinau. A kilogram of strawberries at the Central Market costs up to 70 lei.
Vasile Botan has grown and sold strawberries on the home market for five years, developing a family business. Contacted by IPN, the producer said that this week he will harvest the first crop this year. “Growing strawberries is a profitable business, but the costs incurred are higher than when cultivating vegetables,” he stated.
Mihail Suvac, division head at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, has told IPN that the strawberries in Moldova are grown only in the private sector, on small areas. About 500 tonnes of strawberries were collected last year from an area of 300 hectares.
