An agreement in the field of social security between the Republic of Moldova and the Hellenic Republic and an administrative arrangement for implementing the agreement were signed in Chisinau during the visit paid by the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias, IPN reports.

The document, which was signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu on behalf of the Republic of Moldova, will enable the Moldovans in Greece to obtain pensions depending on the period worked in Greece in the conditions stipulated by the agreement.

In a joint news conference, the head of the Moldovan diplomatic service noted the centuries-old ties between Moldova and Greece. “This is a good platform for intensifying the bilateral relations and the relations within the EU at present,” stated Nicu Popescu, underlining the support in the European integration process offered by Greece to Moldova at multiple levels.

He announced the drafting of a bilateral agreement that will enable to convert driver’s licenses and this will be beneficial to the citizens as well. The Greek side was also asked to allow the young diplomats’ access to the training capacities of Greece.

For his part, Nikos Dendias reminded of the existence of a historical community of Greeks in Moldova and of the current Moldovan diaspora in Greece. Speaking about cooperation between the states, he mentioned the cooperation within the UN, noting there are unused capacities in regional organizations, such as BSEC. Greece is ready to provide technical support for the reforms that the Moldovan authorities intend not do to come closer and integrate into the EU. He encouraged Chisinau to align itself with the EU foreign policy decisions with increased determination, saying the Moldovan authorities didn’t condemn Turkey in the Cyprus dispute.

In another development, the ministers agreed to stimulate interaction between the national bodies so as to foster more active participation by Greek businesses in the economy of the Republic of Moldova.
