Moldova’s Embassy in the Russian Federation informs the citizens of the Republic of Moldova that they are liable to criminal punishment if they become involved in military actions on the territory of other states, as the national and international regulations provide. The specification was made in the context of the launch of partial mobilization in Russia and the conduct of campaigns of recruitment, including in private military facilities, IPN reports.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, the participation by mercenaries in an armed conflict, military actions or other violent actions in the Republic of Moldova is punished with five to ten years in jail. The persons who deal with the employment of mercenaries, their training and financing are punished with ten to 15 years in jail.
The Ministry calls on the Moldovan citizens to contact Moldova’s Embassy in the Russian Federation if their rights are violated so as to receive consular support. The persons with dual nationality should take into account the fact that they are considered Russian citizens by the Russian Federation on the territory of Russia, while Moldova’s options to offer consular assistance are limited.
The Ministry condemns the escalation of the military aggression against Ukraine by Russia by the recent announcement of partial mobilization and the organization of illegal “referendums” that flagrantly violate the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and international law norms.
After the meeting of the Supreme Security Council held last Saturday, President Maia Sandu said that it is considered the opportunity of stripping the Moldovan citizens who also hold Russian nationality and enroll in the Russian army of Moldovan nationality. The punishment for the citizens with Moldovan nationality only, including for the promotion of war, will be made harsher.
