Moldovans choose to borrow from banks in lei, mostly for terms of 2-5 years

The new loans last December amounted to 8.096,4 billion lei, up 22.8% compared to last November. As regards the terms, the most popular ones were the loans repayable in 2 to 5 years, with a share of 45 percent, IPN reports.

The National Bank of Moldova said that the loans in national currency represented 75.6%. They totaled 6.117,3 billion lei, up by 21.1% compared to the previous month.

The average nominal rate on new loans granted in national currency decreased by 0.01 percentage points against the previous month to 8.26 percent, while the average rate on those in foreign currency declined by 0.14 p.p. to 5.67 percent.

Individuals in December 2024 raised loans to the value of 2.279,4 billion lei, the same amount as in the previous month. The consumer loans constituted the largest part, 53.2%.

Most of the consumer loans taken out by individuals were granted in national currency for terms of 2 to 5 years.

Mortgages represented 46.3% of the total new loans granted to individuals and were raised only in national currency.

Compared to last November, legal entities last month applied for more loans in national currency, +40.9 percent. The volume of loans in foreign currency increased by 18.0 percent, while those pegged to the foreign exchange rate rose 8.4 times.

Some 62.4% of the new loans were taken out by non-financial entities.
