Only the Moldovan wine and grapes can present the past, present and future of the country. Despite the difficulties faced on some of the markets, the wine industry continues to develop with small, but firm steps, the efforts being aimed at keeping and restoring vineries, equipping wineries, increasing the quality of wines and promoting these abroad, Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Nicolae Ciubuc stated in the inauguration of the National Wine Day that is celebrated in the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau on October 6 and 7, IPN reports.

Nicolae Ciubuc said the improvement of the quality of wines is the most valuable achievement of the wine sector. The Moldovan wines in the first nine months of this year won over 400 medals. During the past seven months, Moldova’s wine exports rose by about 17%. The grape harvest this year is expected to be large, of over 660,000 tonnes. These will be used to produce over 23 decaliters of wine.

Attending the event, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said Moldova’s wines went through difficult patches on their path, facing the bans imposed by Russia, but the wine producers managed to reorient themselves to the EU. Currently, the Moldovan wines can be found not only in the EU, but also in the U.S. and China.

Gheorghe Arpentin, director of the National Office of Vine and Wine, said the wine is the national pride of Moldova. When the National Office of Vine and Wine was created, the brand “Wine of Moldova” appeared and this became the common voice of the wine industry in the country and abroad. “The area develops swiftly and we have to adjust to the requirements of time and our efforts are aimed at achieving this goal. Owing to each person involved in the production of wines, these are of a better quality and are better known,” stated Gheorghe Arpentin.

On the occasion of the holiday, the best winemakers were awarded. The company “Sălcuța” collected the Top Prize in Winemaking for special merits in making high-quality wines, perpetuation of traditions and the exceptional quality of national wines. Petru Vicol of Asconi Winery was named the most skillful oenologist of the year. The recognition medal “Wine of Moldova. A Legend Alive” was handed over to professor Anatolie Bălănuță, oenologist Mihai Sava, Purcari Winery, Fautor Winery, Bravo Wine Winery and Asconi Winery.

Sixty winemakers will present their products in the central square of Chisinau on the National Wine Day. The visitors are urged to consume wine moderately and responsibly. During the two days, folkloric groups from all over the country will give performances downtown. The evening concerts will feature pop music singers and bands. For the first time in the holiday’s history, the Moldovan wines are celebrated in the Romanian commune Snagov, where 20 winemakers will offer the visitors to taste hundreds of high-quality wines with Protected Geographical Indication.

The 17th National Wine Day is devoted to the Moldova wines with Protected Geographical Indication, which is a guarantee of their high quality.
