State Ecological Inspectorate (IES) warns that 79 of the 84 Moldova’s residual water recycling stations do not function properly, causing serious damages to environment and population’s health.
According to IES consultant, Elena Belousov, at present water recycling systems are shattered in urban and rural areas as well. One of the main causes are the deficiency of fresh water supplies for the population, which leads to utilization of a 4 times bigger quantity of recycled water compared to ‘90s, the stations’ high rate of wear, the management of water cleaning systems by local authorities, which do not have the proper experience and necessary investments.
„The problem of residual water persists for years in the majority of localities, the worst situation being in Soroca, Rezina, Criuleni, Calarasi and Ungheni, and as a result of residual water evacuation the quality of the water of the rivers Dniester and Prut keeps worsening,” the expert mentioned.
Belousov mentions that an important source of pollution is the big quantity of farm waste, which in 2005 amounted to 13 million cubic meters. Being spread on large areas, they have a big impact on surface waters, from which over 166,000 dwells and about 70% of the rural population of Moldova are supplied.
IES noted that only 5 stations recycle properly residual water. These are the SA Apa-Canal’s from Balti and Floresti, sugar factories’ in Glodeni and Drochia, as well as can factories’ in Cosnita.
