A Moldovan man was stopped at the Palanca - Maiaki-Udobnoe joint border crossing point with jewels that he didn’t declare. A total of 157 items, such as rings, earrings, bracelets and crosses, were found in the handbag, in pockets of the clothes and in the car seats. The man didn’t have documents of origin for the jewelry. The General Border Police Inspectorate transmitted the case to the customs authority, IPN reports, quoting a press release.
The man is 38 and is from Anenii Noi district. He told the border police officers that he didn’t know he was obliged to declare the goods. If he had managed to smuggle the goods into the country, the jewels would have been sold in Chisinau. The value of the jewelry wasn’t specified.
The law on the taking of goods into and out of Moldova provides that private individuals can bring goods for personal use into the country without paying import duties on condition that they are not intended for commercial or production activities. The value cannot exceed €300 for goods introduced by travellers who use road transport and €430 for goods brought by travellers using air or maritime transport. Import duties are levied if the given limits are exceeded.
